Street Identification Numbers - Village of Sherwood

VILLAGE OF SHERWOOD

ORDINANCE NO. 99-617

AN ORDINANCE REQUIRING THE PLACING OF STREET IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS UPON ALL RESIDENCES, PLACES OF BUSINESS AND OTHER PRIMARY BUILDING STRUCTURES, WITHIN THE VILLAGE OF SHERWOOD.

WHEREAS, each residence, place of business or other primary building structure within the Village of Sherwood, is and/or shall be assigned a street identification number by and through the Village; and,

WHEREAS, Police, Fire Departments and other emergency personnel have determined that some residences or places of business or other primary structures within the Village of Sherwood, have not placed assigned numbers upon said buildings or have assigned numbers which are not plainly visible; and,

WHEREAS, the Village of Sherwood Board of Trustees determines that it is necessary for the general welfare and safety of the Village that street identification numbers be existing and be visible on all residences, places of business and other primary structures within the Village of Sherwood;

NOW, THEREFORE, the Village Board of Trustees, Village of Sherwood, do ordain as follows:

1 Incorporation. The aforementioned preamble is incorporated herein by reference.

2. Identification Numbering, From and after the effective date of this Ordinance (its date of adoption and public posting thereafter), each residence, place of business, or other primary building structure within the Village of Sherwood, shall be required to have assigned to it, from and through the Village, a street identification number.

All such assigned identification numbers shall be placed 1) upon a mailbox or 2) upon a signpost located at or near the front property line or 3) upon a building (only if such building is located within 20 feet of the right-of-way), on or as close as possible to the entrance door. All such identification numbers shall be visible, from both directions, from the abutting public right-of-way. (Example: If the right-of-way runs North and South, then the numbers must be visible from North of the mailbox or signpost, and South of the mailbox or signpost; on cul-de-sacs, the numbers must be visible from all angles.)

This Ordinance shall not prohibit the assigned numbers from being written out in addition to the numerical numbers required above. The Village Board may grant variances from the terms of this Ordinance if a property owner can demonstrate that a literal enforcement of the Ordinance will be unduly burdensome.
